Steve Jobs Resigns As CEO Of Apple

In a surprise announcement today, Steve Jobs resigned as CEO, Tim Cook will replace him. Jobs will be a chairman for the company. Below is the full letter that Jobs sent to the board of directors:

To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

Steve Jobs was seen as one of the most hands on and involved CEO's around, and its credited as reinvigorating the Apple brand starting with iMacs and iPods, all the way to today, with the iPhone and iPad.

I believe Apple will be fine after this announcement, from the letter you can see Apple had a succession plan in order. I also believe that Tim Cook understands Jobs' vision and will guide the company in that direction.

HP Halts Production on WebOS

Jon Rubinstein holds a TouchPad
HP has just announced that they will halt the production of its webOS line of of mobile devices. The TouchPad, the Veer and Pre line of smart phones are being discontinued.

Sales of the TouchPad were anemic at best following scathing reviews of its software being buggy and slow, and little selection of applications at launch. Just yesterday news broke out that Best Buy was sitting on a large inventory of TouchPads that were not selling and wanted a refund from HP.
Their phones were not selling very well either, in spite of some of them being free with a 2 year contract.

WebOS has a perfect track record with lackluster devices. The first failure of webOS was the original Pre, the Pixi, then of course the Pre 2, the Veer and now the TouchPad. The Veer is so small and ergonomically awkward to use that many people were wondering why launch such a device after Microsoft's fiasco with the Kin line of phones.

I believe the reason for the Veer was that around that time there were rumors of an iPhone nano so Palm/HP wanted to beat them to market with a tiny phone. That is the only logical explanation for the release of the Veer. Along those same lines, the multiple delays of the Pre 3 were because Apple did not announce the iPhone 5 in June and HP wanted to wait for its specs to make sure that the Pre 3 would launch with similar or better features.

Google To Acquire Droid Maker Motorola Mobility

Google will buy Motorola Mobility, maker of the Droid line of smart phones for Verizon Wireless. Google Has agreed to pay 12.5 billion dollars, or $40 a share, to close the deal. Chief Executive Larry Page said in a conference call the Motorola will be run as a separate company. The deal is expected to be finalized pending regulatory approval by the end of this year or in early 2012.

Google is mainly focused on the protection it gains from the deal to defend itself, and its partners from patent infringement claims coming from Apple and from Microsoft. Currently the Android OS is being the target of lawsuits because although it is an open OS, it borrows heavily from intellectual property from Oracle. Google's chief counsel David Drummond said "We Believe we''ll be in a very good position to protect the Android ecosystem for all of our partners." This statement clarifies what companies like Oracle and Apple have been dealing with; Android OS is in clear violation of infringing on their patents. What can be deduced from Drummond's comment is that it knows Android was vulnerable without Motorola's patents. This however is not the end for Android's infringement troubles, but it is a start.

Recently in Europe sales of the Android running Galaxy Tab by Samsung have been halted due to copyright infringement claims by Apple.

Leave a comment below with your thoughts and what do you think this means for Google's partners like HTC and Samsung.
