Palm has announced today its newest smartphone, the Palm Pixi. It probably is no coincidence that they are announcing the same day that Apple has it's Event in San Francisco. The main difference between this phone and the Palm Pre is that the Pixi has no slide-out keyboard. My guess for that is they wanted to keep cost down, and users of the Pre have complained that slideout keyboard seemed flimsy and prone to breaking. Since this phone really has nothing new to offer I can expect Apple to steal the headlines today, especially if Steve Jobs make a triumphant return on stage. The price has not been announced (although Palm did say that it would be cheaper than the Pre) but the price of the Pre has fallen by $50 to $150 to stimulate demand. In my opinion this phone has no killer features that will set it appart from anything else out there. It does have a removable back cover that can be swapped by purchasing "designer" back covers. I believe this is a move by Palm to get some cash flowing to them because accessories have a very high profit margin espeacially those back covers that will probably be at least $30.
The phone has been announced to be available from Sprint in time for the holiday season. By then, the HTC Hero would have already come out (October 11) which I for one, am more excited about. Sprint is also expected to release several other Android based phones from Samsung and Motorola.
